Martin Cardenas scored the Daytona SportBike Race 2 win at New Orleans Motorsports Park.
Martin Cardenas got past Cameron Beaubier on the final lap for the Daytona SportBike Race 2 win at NOLA.
Geico Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas ended his championship winning season with the AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Race 2 win at New Orleans Motorsports Park. The Colombian rider took the win with a final lap pass by Yamaha Extended Service’s Cameron Beaubier. Kneedraggers.com’s Tommy Aquino followed suit, passing M4 Suzuki’s Dane Westby on the last lap to finish in third.

Cardenas got to the front early, but had Beaubier and Aquino close behind. Beaubier slipped back to fifth after the second lap, but was still just 1.5 seconds behind Cardenas. Four laps later Beauber had recovered position and began challenging Cardenas for the front. The two riders built a gap on the field that grew to over 14 seconds at the checkers. With three laps remaining, Beaubier finally found a line to the front past Cardenas, though the Suzuki ace remained right on Beaubier’s rear tire. In the end, Cardenas was able to throttle past for the win just before the finish, claiming his eighth race win of the season.

"For sure I wanted to beat Cameron," said Cardenas. "Lately, he was winning a lot. I was prepared to give everything. If it worked out? Fine. If not? The ground was also okay. I gave everything I had."

Road Race Factory’s JD Beach and Team Latus Motors Racing’s Jason DiSalvo moved into fifth and sixth respectively early in the contest and were unable to advance any higher before the finish. DiSalvo was within reach of passing for fifth, but was unable to find a line past the Yamaha rider.

Beaubier’s teammate Tommy Hayden took seventh ahead of Team Beck Racing’s Michael Beck. Aquino’s teammate David Gaviria finished in ninth while Turners Cycle Racing’s K. Turner rounded out the top-10.

Cardenas sealed the 2012 title in the previous rounds, but added to his advantage over Westby with his Race 2 win. Beaubier finishes off the season third overall after making a big comeback in points after missing an entire round early in the season. Hayden trails his teammate in fourth and DiSalvo held to fifth, just three points ahead of Beach in sixth.
