World Superbike Misano Results 2012

Sunday, June 10, 2012
Aprilia Racing's Max Biaggi has consolidated his grip on the World Superbike points standings by taking the double at Misano. Biaggi benefitted from critical DNFs from his SBK rivals and former MotoGP comrades Marco Melandri and Carlos Checa to now hold a 28.5 point lead in the series. Mad Max was joined on the podium by the Althea Racing duo of Checa and Davide Giugliano in Race 1, with Castrol Honda’s Jonathan Rea and BMW Motorrad’s Leon Haslam in Race 2.

Race 1

Biaggi earned his second first-place finish of the season with his Race 1 win at Misano. The Italian rider was followed by Althea Racing’s Checa in second and his teammate Giugliano in third. Biaggi had a lackluster performance in qualifying, starting Race 1 from 10th in the third row, but he came out of the gates strong and was in sixth by the end of Lap 1. Checa started even further back in the fourth row, but both riders eventually passed through the field, securing their final positions in first and second on Lap 22 of 24. Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes came in fourth, missing the podium by over four seconds. After running up front for most of the race, Honda’s Jonathan Rea rounded out the top five.

Rea started in the front row, just one behind Sykes who had pole position. The Honda rider quickly got out front and maintained the lead well into the 16th lap. Giugliano was on the move for position though, having worked his way up from fourth to second by Lap 13. Biaggi and Checa were also in the mix out front, so when Rea lost his lead to Giugliano, he fell back to fourth behind the eventual podium finishers. Guigliano maintained the lead for just four laps before Biaggi and Checa bumped him to third.

Pole position starter Sykes lost the lead off the start but held in second-place through the first 10 laps. The Kawasaki rider kept close to Rea's rear tire while in podium position, but then lost position mid-race falling down to seventh before rallying back.

Race 2

Biaggi took a much more commanding win in Race 2, beating out his closest competition by over five seconds. Rea secured a podium finish in second, holding off BMW Motorrad’s Haslam, who came in third. Haslam’s teammate, Marco Melandri, was able to maneuver his way into fourth place, followed by BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet’s Ayrton Badovini in fifth. With high temperatures and a dry track, riders' success rested largely on their bike set-up.

"After the test sessions I chose a tyre which wasn't the fastest as far as lap times go, but the one that gave me more confidence," said Biaggi. "In any case I had to take some risks because there are very few places to overtake here, but in the end I was successful and I'm leaving Misano with an incredible double win."

Sykes started Race 2 in pole position once again, but Biaggi came out fast and held third through Lap 1, taking the lead by Lap 4. Once the Roman got out front, there was no catching him as he pulled a gap that would eventually be over seven seconds during much of the final portion of the race. Rea, on the other hand, had to concentrated on keeping Haslam at bay, the BMW rider never more than a second behind in third during the last half of the race. Sykes struggled as the race wore on, falling steadily behind in position until leveling out in seventh on Lap 18.

Melandri was forced to retire late in Race 1 and had to remain steady in Race 2 in order to remain near the top of the points standings. He worked his way up from ninth, slowly advancing his position through the first 10 laps and holding Badovini to fifth through the final laps.

A number of riders went down during Race 2 including Checa, Giugliano, Team Effenbert Liberty Racing's Sylvain Guintoli and Aprilia's Eugene Laverty, all top ten finishers in Race 1. Checa crashed out very early in the race during his push for position. The Spaniard made contact with Melandri while trying to pass at a notoriously dangerous part of the track and went down. He quickly returned to the garage and was unable to return to the race. Similarly, Giugliano was advancing through the field and attempting to pass Sykes when he went down. The absence of so many consistent riders gave others such as Badovini and Barni Racing's Matteo Baiocco their best finishes of the season.

Biaggi extended his points lead to 28.5 over Rea, who moved from fourth to second after Misano. Sykes remains in third, now ahead of Melandri who fell to fourth. Checa remains steady in fifth-place.
