Ben Spies Yamaha MotoGP 2012
Ben Spies recently announced, via Twitter, that he will not ride for Yamaha Factory Racing in 2013.
Ben Spies riled-up the Twitter-sphere on Sunday, giving rise to speculation that he will leave Yamaha after the current season. Spies first posted that “u can say next year will be a bit diff I’d say. Excited at all prospects stay tuned,” followed soon after by “I thought I’d be dramatic like all the sites and reporters are haha maybe nothing changes except to be back were we are meant to be!”

Speculation on Spies’ future has been growing in intensity over the past weeks. Spies’ underwhelming performance through the first half of this year has left many wondering where he will be in MotoGP at the end of the current season. Tech 3 satellites have regularly finished ahead of the American rider and there appear to be no factory seats available, as rumors suggest current Ducati rider Valentino Rossi may return to Yamaha.

Early Tuesday on Spies' Twitter feed, he linked to an article on Superbike Planet. In the article Spies states that he won't be with Yamaha at the end of the season. The optimism of the former AMA and World Superbike champion's recent tweets suggests that he is open to any opportunity. His most recent thoughts, at the time of writing, sum things up nicely: “I’m extremely happy to push for the rest of the season to my fans and myself, next year starts a new chapter. And yes I’m pumped!”

Spies would be smart to stay away from anything Suzuki. Their racing programs kinda suck. Besides AMA 600 classes (where they still get pretty whipped by Yamaha) they kinda suck. WSS, no gsxr 600s. WSBK, Suzuki is pretty much always out of the top 10. Hayes and Yamaha have been trouncing Blake and Suzuki here in the AMA Superbike. Has anyone even seen pics of a prototype Suzuki? We are already half way through the season. Maybe they will come out with some CRT entries but I don't think Suzuki is a realistic spot for Ben.

Spies will run with Team Suzuki MotoGP in 2013.

Talk about "what have you done for me lately". Spies gave Yamaha a championship three years ago and one bad season and he's having to look elsewhere. If this is Yamaha's doing.....it's garbage. Where's the loyality?

I agree that WSBK is more fun to watch but the best riders still compete in GP. We will never see it (or at least not soon) but could you imagine if Stoner or Lorenzo had a wild card ride in WSBK. I imagine it would be a lot like watching a GP race where they are just gone and riders compete for 3rd and 4th. It is disappointing to me to see this happening. I don't understand what is going on with Ben or in his garage. That is something that is never reported. Where is TMZ when you need it? What is really going on with Ben in relation to his poor results this year is what I am interested in reading about. As boring as GP is becoming, a step back down to WSBK is just that, a step down. At least the racing is better and it will be fun to watch. BMW is a good guess. I have been reading on Euro sites that Checa is thinking he doesn't want to ride the Panigale. Perhaps a seat on a Ducati could also be one of the offers on the table?

Well, that decides it, no more MotoGP watching for me. That series is about as exciting as NASCAR now anyway.

It's a wild turn of events in MotoGP. So, where do you really expect him to show up? If it was up to me, Spies would return to World Superbike (The premier international roadracing series these days) and that's where he can excel and get back to winning. I predict he replaces Haslam at BMW.

Does anyone suspect he will ride a BMW?

He will probably go play baseball or something.

Not a surprise. They have been unable to be consistently competitive. Spies isn't the focus of Team Yamaha.
