Monster Energy Cup Results 2012

Saturday, October 20, 2012
The 2012 Monster Energy Cup was an action-packed sequel to the inaugural event in 2011. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto returned to defend his title and looked to be on track to another million but an early crash in the second race opened the door to Muscle Milk Honda’s Justin Barcia and Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac, who took wins in Race 2 and Race 3 respectively. Drama permeated the ranks though, with Honda’s Chad Reed slipping after a fall and Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey dealing with a broken shifter in the first two races, all this on top of the shifts in position that came by way of the dreaded Joker Lane.

Main Event 1

Ryan Villopoto won the first race of the night but crashed in the second and didnt start the third leaving him fourth overall in the 2012 Monster Energy Cup.
Defending champion Ryan Villopoto kicked off the 2012 Monster Energy Cup with the win in Main Event 1.
The 2012 Monster Energy Cup kicked off with a mechanical issue on the start line when a gate failed to drop, forcing officials to red flag and re-line the riders. Once underway it was a familiar face, Ryan Villopoto, who took the checkers in a commanding performance, beating out  Barcia by over seven seconds. 2012 AMA Motocross champion Ryan Dungey trailed in third.

Action was heated right from the start with JGRMX Yamaha's Josh Grant earning the early lead ahead of Dungey, Villopoto and Barcia. Three laps in RV had taken the front and started to build a gap on the field. Villipoto is the defending champion at the Monster Energy Cup, having taken the million dollar prize in the inaugural event in 2011. He sat out the 2012 Motocross season due to an injury sustained during Supercross earlier in the year and Main Event 1 marks his return to competitive racing.

Dungey lost some ground mid-race after taking the Joker Lane and fell to seventh, but the KTM rider was able to regain most of it before the checkers, thanks in large part to the number of riders who waited to take the detour until the final laps. RV and Barcia had enough of a gap on the field to hold their positions out front, but Reed and Grant slipped to fifth and sixth respectively late in the contest behind Tomac, who took fourth. FMF's Mike Alessi ended the first contest in seventh, followed by Kyle Cunningham in eighth with Alessi's teammate, Jake Canada, in ninth. Riding for JGRMX Yamaha for the first time since his move from Factory Honda, Justin Brayton rounded out the top-10.

The tables turned for Villopoto in Main Event 2 after going down while running in first. RV fell to the back of the pack, opening up the lead early in the contest. Barcia ended the race out front, beating Dungey by over four seconds. Alessi, who was holding to second until the final lap, dropped to third when he took the Joker right before the finish.

Dungey broke his shifter in ME1 and the problems continued during ME2 when he hit a tuff block and broke the shifter a second time, but the KTM rider was able to improvise and keep pace with the lead pack. Tomac finished the race in fourth with Grant following in fifth. Reed took sixth after slipping from the top-three in a crash. He was able to remount and recovered to seventh, but could only make up one position before the checkers.

Villopoto battled back, but was only able to reach 12th before the end of the 10-lap contest.

Tomac decided to take the Joker early in the third race of the night and the decision paid off as he took over the front from Barcia heading into the final lap and won the race. Dungey finished the final event of the evening in third.

Dungey came out strong and led for the first half of the race, but lost position when he took the detour through Joker Lane, leaving Barcia and Tomac to battle out front.

"All the guys in this class are really fast, and I am happy to turn in the performance I did tonight,” said Barcia. "I tried to hold off (going into the Joker Lane) until late in the race, and that gave Eli the chance to move into the lead. I have been working hard and will continue to work hard.”

Reed finished over 14 seconds behind Dungey in fourth, followed by Grant in fifth and Cunningham in sixth. Canada took seventh while Jeff Ward Racing’s Kyle Chisholm scored eighth.

Barcia came out the big winner of the evening with his 2-1-2 performance, though that means there’s no million dollar winner for 2012 since no one could pull off a perfect sweep. Barcia didn't go home empty handed though and scored a $100,000 prize for his win. Dungey took second, going 3-2-3 with Tomac rounding out the top-three overall. Reed was moved up to fourth after a recalculation of the initial scores, an update which put Villopoto to 10th as a result of his 1-12-DNS finish.
