The 2013 450 Supercross field is one of the most stacked in recent memory and the battle at Phoenix only served to reinforce that fact. Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Barcia got a great start and ran out front early, building a lead which he was able to hold to the checkers, earning the first premier-class win of his career. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto battled his way through the pack to finish second, followed by Suzuki’s Davi Millsaps in third.

“I can’t tell you how excited I am right now,” said Barcia. “I didn’t think this win would come so soon. I kept it smooth out there, but the track was super slick. It was a great night for me.”

Early in the race, Barcia faced pressure from Millsaps and Two Two Motorsports’ Chad Reed. Neither rider was able to keep pace with Bam Bam and after the first four laps, the Honda ace had built a gap of over four seconds on his closest competition. Villopoto was back in seventh through the opening laps, just behind Barcia’s teammate Trey Canard. Both Villopoto and Canard moved up through the pack as the race progressed, getting past Millsaps and Reed for podium position. Entering the final lap it appeared as if Canard would grab the runner-up spot, but his bike slid out and he fell back in position just before the checkers, allowing RV to move into second. Reed finished the night in fourth, followed by Canard in fifth.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer started strong but slipped back in the ranks as others pushed forward, though he was able to remain steady in sixth. Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart ended the night in seventh followed by Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey in eighth. Dungey had a difficult night, getting off the start in 16th. He was able to charge through much of the pack, but time ran out before he could make up enough time to earn a top-five finish. Team Chaparral Honda’s Andrew Short took ninth and JGRMX’s Josh Grant finished in 10th.

Thanks to Millsaps' win in Round 1 at Anaheim, he remains the points leader after the showdown in Phoenix. Barcia is now up to second and Canard slipped down to third. Reed sits two points behind Canard in fourth and Dungey  fell back to fifth.
