Anaheim 2 450 Supercross Results 2013

Ryan Villopoto earned his first win of the 2013 season in Anaheim 2.
Ryan Villopoto took his first race win of the season at Anaheim 2 ahead of Trey Canard and Chad Reed.
Defending Supercross champion Ryan Villopoto of Monster Energy Kawasaki made a definitive push for the points lead in Anaheim 2, getting to the front mid-race and holding to the checkers for his first race win of the season. Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Trey Canard held steady in second, followed by Two Two Motorsports’ Chad Reed in third.

“The season didn’t start like we wanted it to,” said Villopoto. “I had a decent race in Phoenix and the team made good changes to the bike this week. We’ve finally got the ball going in the right direction and are digging ourselves out of the hole. Once I got into the lead, I was just trying to click of the laps and keep it consistent. The track was really slippery tonight, but I still tried to keep the pace up.”

Off the start Canard moved to the front, followed by Rockstar Suzuki’s Davi Millsaps in second and Villopoto’s teammate, Jake Weimer, in third. Villopoto was back in fourth and pushed hard for the lead, making it up through the ranks early in the contest and holding there until the checkers. Canard never slipped from the runner-up spot, though Millsaps lost third after he slid out, giving Reed the line to thid.

Justin Barcia landed hard after a jump and hit his head on the cross bar. He was forced to retire from the race to seek medical attention.

Canard’s teammate, Justin Barcia, had a difficult night, crashing in his heat and having to go to the LCQ to make the main. Not long into the race, Barcia hit his head on the cross bar after coming up short off a jump, forcing him to pull out of compeition to seek medical help. Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart, riding with a torn ACL, struggled in the race after a bad start left him wrangling with riders outside the top-10. He ended the night in 12th.

“The day didn’t go the way I hoped it would,” said Stewart. “But it started out good, the Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450 was working great in qualifying and my heat race. But in the main, I got a bad start and then I got tangled up with another rider a couple of times and I fell over the second time. It was frustrating because I felt good going into the main event. But now I’m just focusing on Oakland next weekend. I like racing there and I’ve done well there in the past, so we’ll see if we can’t turn things around.”

Millsaps continues to hold the overall lead and has a three point advantage over Canard in second. Reed moved up to third and Villopoto made a big jump from seventh to fourth thanks to his race win. Dungey remains in fifth, followed by RV's teammate Jake Weimer in sixth.

In a bit of unexpected news prior to the race, veteran rider Kevin Windham announced his retirement.

""I would love nothing more than to ride forever," Windham said. "To the fans of Supercross, this might seem to be a hasty decision, but I've been talking to a lot of people for a lot of months. I thought I would be able to come into the season and ride myself out of that funk and that mental hurdle I was having to overcome. With every passing lap - be it at the test track, my home track, or the stadium - it became more and more difficult to ride with the clarity I needed to be safe, fast, and successful.

Kevin Windham ended his 19-year long pro career at the age of 34 at Anaheimm 2.

"The common comment from the people I've spoken to was that if you aren't riding with clarity, you are asking your fears to come upon you. It wasn't the storyline I wanted to write or the final chapter I envisioned, but it became obvious, and we'll try and figure out what's next."
