San Diego 450 Supercross Results 2013

Saturday, February 9, 2013

Rockstar Suzuki’s Davi Millsaps continues to enjoy one of his best seasons ever, taking the 450 SX win in San Diego. He also gives Suzuki its first ever win in San Diego and stretches out his overall points lead in the series. Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Barcia made his third trip to the podium this year, taking second-place and finishing over two seconds behind Millsaps, followed by Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey in third.

Millsaps was nearly flawless in the main event, grabbing the holeshot and leading all 20 laps of the race.

“What can I say, when you’re able to pull the holeshot and ride 20 clean laps you make life a lot easier on yourself,” said Millsaps. “It’s been a great start to the season and everyone is working hard to make this happen. You have to be there every week in order to have a chance to win this thing (the championship), and we’re doing our best to keep it out front.”

While the Suzuki ace was occupied out front, battles raged behind between the top riders in the class. During the first half of competition Two Two Motorsports’ Chad Reed held to second, giving Millsaps plenty of pressure, but mid-race went down while fighting to find a line to the front. He was able to recover in seventh and make up two positions before the checkers, ending the night in fifth. Off the start, RCH Suzuki’s Broc Tickle ran in third, but lost the spot in the opening laps as Barcia pushed from fifth to battle out front.

Yamaha rider Justin Brayton fought tooth and nail through all 20 laps, slipping from third-place down to his finishing position in seventh, but fending off the likes of Dungey, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto and Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart for much of the race. Brayton was running in third until Dungey made a pass that stuck with six laps remaining.

“I’m actually pretty happy with my ride tonight,” said Dungey. “It was a tough track to pass on and as I didn’t get a great start, I think I rode pretty strong to come through the pack and finish on the box. It would definitely make my life a little easier if I could keep getting a start like I did last week! But that’s just something I have to work on”.

After Dungey moved into third, Brayton was locked in a battle with Stewart, Reed and RV that saw positions change hands numerous times. Stewart and Reed earned fourth and fifth respectively thanks to Villopoto’s late race fall that left him in sixth.

Barcia’s teammate, Trey Canard, couldn’t make up ground after falling back in the pack early on, remaining in eighth until the finish. Honda’s Andrew Short was similarly steady in ninth, as was MotoConcepts’ Mike Alessi in 10th.

Millsaps now has a 19 point advantage over Dungey, who remains second overall. Villopoto holds to third, but is mathematically tied now with Canard, who sits fourth. Reed is stalwart in fifth, while Barcia gained one position, moving to sixth ahead of Short in seventh. Barcia and Short are also mathematically tied, but thanks to Bam Bam’s win in Phoenix, he earns the better position.
