Indy 450 Supercross Results 2013

Saturday, March 16, 2013
The crowd at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis witnessed Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto win his third Supercross Main Event in a row for his sixth victory of the year. Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey came through with a hard fought second, and Suzuki’s James Stewart earned his third podium of the season with the final spot on the box.

Out of the gate Rockstar Suzuki’s Davi Millsaps grabbed the holeshot with Stewart in tow. Shortly after JS7 made the move on Millsaps for the lead and made it stick. Villopoto was not far behind, as well as Dungey. First lap carnage claimed Jake Wiemer on the start, while Honda’s Trey Canard landed swapped while dicing with stable mate Justin Barcia. Number-41 hit the ground hard and was out for the night.

Seven laps in, RV2 finally got around Millsaps after keep the pressure on for numerous laps. The Suzuki pilot didn’t give it up easy however and made Villopoto work for it. Dungey then set his sights on the second place points holder. Meanwhile Stewart was all-alone in the lead.

As has been the case many times, Stewart made an unpressured bobble that left him stalled in a corner. This allowed Villopoto, Millsaps and Dungey by. Shortly after RD5 got by Number-18 with a gnarly pass that almost saw the two occupying the same space on a landing of a jump to flat.

As the race wore on Dungey pulled in on Villopoto and kept him honest until the checkers flew. With just a few corners remaining Millsaps washed out the front end on a flat rutted corner, giving Stewart third place.

Millsaps recovered for fourth place. Honda’s Justin Barcia ran a quiet fifth place while Chad Reed worked from a less than stellar start to grab sixth. Andrew Short put his KTM in seventh ahead of Matt Goerke. Eli Tomac put his CRF450R ride in ninth, and LCQ hero Weston Peick rounded out the top-ten.

“Lucas Oil Stadium has been good to me, this place is awesome. The dirt was pretty good, but tonight it was a little bit sketchy,” claimed Villopoto after the race. “I just had to push; Ryan (Dungey) was there and we were going all out.”

“I was trying to put the pressure on Ryan (Villopoto) and was riding a great race,” said Dungey. “I was looking to try and the pass somewhere out there but unfortunately didn’t and ended up second. I’m happy with it and we’ll keep going from here.”

Villopoto gained more ground in the points, moving ahead of Millspas by nine with 227 points. Dungey is also still in the hunt with 210.
