Jason Anderson celebrates his first 250 SX win of the season in Salt Lake City.
Jason Anderson took his first win of the season in 250 SX West in the penultimate round of 2013 in Salt Lake City.
The penultimate round of the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross season at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City opened with a 250 SX West battle between some of the best off-road riders around, minus current series points leader Ken Roczen of Red Bull KTM. Rockstar Suzuki’s Jason Anderson took full advantage of Roczen’s absence, scoring his first race win of the year over five seconds ahead of Troy Lee Design rider, Cole Seely. Monster Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Martin Davalos charged up the ranks to finish in third.

“It’s crazy,” said Anderson. “The last five laps were definitely tough to be out front. To come out with a win, I’m stoked. This team has been there for me from the beginning and to get a win for them is awesome. I always seem to race well here [in Salt Lake City]. I’m not sure what it is, but I like it.”

Roczen had some issues in his heat race, and eventually pulled off to the pits. In the LCQ, he went down in Turn 1 early in the race and fell outside the top-10. He battled back but ran out of time, finishing in third-place less than one second behind Slayton Racing’s Topher Ingalls and missing out on a spot in the main.

"It was a bad night, definitely not what I came here to do,” said Roczen. “I wanted to finish the season off strong, not with a DNF at the second-to-last race. As much as I had bad luck tonight, I did get a little break with Tomac finishing sixth, so I still have the championship lead going into Las Vegas next weekend. I will need to ride the race of my life there.”

Anderson ran out front within the opening laps and held there to the checkers. Davalos was sixth early on but ran though the pack to earn a spot on the rostrum within the first five laps.

JDR JStar’s Malcolm Stewart ended in fourth, followed by Seely’s teammate, Christian Craig, in fifth. GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac took sixth at the finish, struggling through the main and falling as far back as eighth mid-race. Anderson’s teammate, Ryan Sipes, grabbed seventh and Davalos’ teammate, Tyla Rattray, finished in eighth. JDR’s Joey Savatgy and Valli Motosports’ Travis Baker took ninth and 10th respectively.

Despite Roczen’s poor showing, he remains the overall leader with an advantage of five points over Tomac. Seely is third and Anderson is fourth, with Davalos rounding out the top-five.
