Smartop’s Mike Alessi and GEICO Honda’s Wil Hahn came away the big points earners in the Motorcycle-Superstore Holeshot Championship at Budds Creek, with Alessi scoring the total four points available for the weekend in the 450 class and Hahn doing the same in the 250 class. It’s the first time either rider has crossed the white line first this season and both are now in contention for the end-of-year bonuses provided by Motorcycle-Superstore.com.

Alessi, generally a holeshot master, struggled through the first four rounds of 2013, failing to get off the line quickest as riders like Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Barcia and Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart upped their game off the start. The Suzuki rider returned to form at Budds Creek though, showing that the time he spent training during the previous week’s break from racing had paid off.

“Getting both holeshots today was big because we got the maximum number of points and we're right back into this thing," said Alessi. "It's been tough this year. The other guys are really fast, and there's more of them compared to last year. Everyone wants to get a good start. It's harder to do than ever.

"I've worked really hard in these last two weeks to get my starts back, so I'm pumped to see it come together today. Getting good starts, it's one of those things that if you try too hard it just gets worse. You have to just do it and let it happen. I feel like I'm there now and that's exciting."

Hahn, meanwhile, was absent from the opening rounds of the 2013 Nationals in the 250 class, rehabilitating a broken hand that he sustained in the final round of the 2013 Supercross season. The Honda rider left no doubts as to his health, taking the holeshot in both 250 motos and finishing with a 6-5 result that put him fifth overall.

"I want to win that $15K," said Hahn. "That's some serious money that Motorcycle Superstore has put up, and we are all pumped up to go after it. I really thought that after missing four races I'd be out of it, or that it would be really tough for me, but so many different riders have earned holeshots this year that everyone is bunched up. It opened the door for me.

"Good starts are crucial, and it's something I take very seriously. I was hoping I'd be up to form and I was, at least at the start. I got tired at the end of both motos, and that's from not riding as much, but I can't complain about today at all."

This year’s Motorcycle-Superstore Holeshot Championship awards one point to the rider who scores the holeshot in Moto 1, two points to the rider who does so in Moto 2 and a bonus point to the rider who takes holeshots in both motos. Hahn moved to the top of the 250 class rankings, breaking the previous five-way tie while Alessi settled into second in the 450 class, tied at four with Stewart. The holeshot points winner in the 450 class will be awarded $25,000 at the end of the year while the top rider in the 250 class will take home $15,000.
