Washougal 450 Motocross Results 2013

Saturday, July 20, 2013
Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey turned a quick start to a moto win in 450 Moto 1 at Washougal, beating out Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto by just over one second at the checkers. Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart finished off the podium in third.

Dungey pulled a great start, earning the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Moto 1 Holeshot, and was able to build a small gap on the field. Behind, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Barcia settled into second-place through the initial laps, but had Stewart hounding him from third. Villopoto pushed hard from fourth, but a few bobbles set him back slightly and he was forced to make up ground through the first third of the race in order to battle for a spot on the podium.

Barcia was maintaining his position well until he hit a rough spot in right hander that stopped his bike completely. He went down briefly and gave Stewart and RV the opportunity to pass. Barcia recovered to fourth, but was unable to recover any ground on the leaders through the competition.

Once in second-place, Stewart held strong against Villopoto until RV turned up the speed coming down Horsepower Hill. Villopoto accelerated hard through the left-hander and passed JS7 on the outside, leaving the Suzuki rider well behind through the latter stages of the race.

Dungey enjoyed a multiple second lead once RV moved to the runner-up spot, and he maintained an aggressive pace which made it difficult for Villopoto to close the gap. During the final lap RV finally had Dungey in his sights, but it was too late and the KTM rider crossed the finish in first.

Barica ended the day in fourth followed by JGRMX’s Josh Grant in fifth and BTO Sports’ Andrew Short in sixth. Smartop’s Mike Alessi took seventh followed by privateer Weston Peick in eighth.

Villopoto and Dungey led the way once again in Moto 2, with Villopoto coming out on top for the 450 Moto 2 win and his first overall victory at Washougal. Dungey trailed by over eight seconds at the checkers, followed by Stewart an additional 41 seconds back in third-place.

Grant took the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Holeshot by a hair, but quickly lost the lead to Dungey as the KTM rider pushed to the front. RV was also in the lead pack off the start and within the opening turns he and Dungey were already putting a gap on the field. Dungey held out as leader for a number of laps, but Villopoto found his way to the front with just over 20 minutes remaining in competition. The KTM rider fought to keep pace with the current points leader, but was unable to regain the lead once Villopoto took the top-spot.

RV’s teammate, Jake Weimer, finished in fourth followed by RCH Suzuki’s Broc Tickle in fifth. Alessi took sixth followed by Two Two Motorsports’ Chad Ree in seventh.

Villopoto remains the overall points leader as he and Dungey both add 47 to their overall season totals. Despite a frustrating day, Barcia remains third followed by Stewart in fourth and Alessi in fifth.
