Spring Creek 450 Motocross Results 2013

Saturday, July 27, 2013
Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart claimed the overall victory at the Spring Creek 450 Motocross round. Stewart took the top honors for the first time this season via his 1-3 result, with Honda’s Trey Canard runner-up with a consistent 2-2 finish. Minnesota native Ryan Dungey placed third – winning the second moto after a fifth-place result in Moto 1. Honda’s Justin Barcia placed fourth (3-5) with points leader Ryan Villopoto rounding out the top five with his 6-4 byline.

Moto 1

Justin Barcia sprang up front to claim the Motorcycle-Superstore.com holeshot in the opening 450 contest. The factory Honda man was chased by his teammate, Canard, as well as Stewart. But the latter rider quickly charged up to the front and maintained the lead and a welcome return to moto-winning form.

The two Ryans had difficult first motos. The points-leading Villopoto was forced to rebound from an early crash, charging through the field for a point-saving fourth. As for Dungey, the Minnesota native is usually a lock for the Millville steps, but fell far short with a disappointing fifth. The KTM ace faced an unusual problem mid-race when his chain derailed in the sand whoop section, forcing him to dismount and fix the issue. He reentered in 10th-place and was able to push his way back up the ranks, salvaging valuable championship points.

Moto 2

Stewart maintained his lead pace for the opening of the second moto, claiming holeshot which vaults him ahead of Barcia in the Motorcycle-Superstore Holeshot Championship (with its subsequent $25,000 year-end prize). Dungey, however, got back into his familiar pace in front of the home crowd. After dicing with J Stew the KTM ace took the lead en route to his Moto 2 victory.

The fight for second pitted Stewart and Canard against the other. The Honda rider proved more resilient and beat Stewart to the line. Villopoto again struggled to find the steps, with an uncharacteristic fourth-place finish for the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider. Barcia rounded out the top five in the second race.

Villopoto’s unusual 6-4 result at Spring Creek gives ground to Dungey in the championship. It is the first time this season that the Villopoto has not finished on the overall podium, though he still enjoys a commanding 34-point lead in the standings.
