Miller 450 Motocross Results 2013

Saturday, August 17, 2013
The AMA Motocross Series moved to Tooele, Utah for the penultimate round of the championship. The newly constructed track on the grounds of Miller Motorsports would be the stage for Ryan Villopoto to clinch the 2013 title. Earlier this year he won the 2013 AMA Supercross championship just 45 minutes away in Salt Lake City.

In Moto 1 JGR’s Justin Brayton looked like he was going to snag the Motorcycle Superstore Holeshot, but Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto just nipped Bray10 at the line to get another point to move to third in the holeshot championship for $25,000. From that point on, RV2 check out and rode to a commanding win at the first moto ever run at Miller. This put 47 points ahead of Ryan Dungey with just three motos left in the Series.

Dungey came from a sixth-place start to have a fairly protracted battle with Honda’s Trey Canard for the runner up positions. Finally he was able to make the pass down the inside of a flat rutted corner. After getting by Canard, RD5 distanced himself quickly but still finished well behind Villopoto. Canard held onto his podium finish.

Privateer Weston Peick was having on the best days of his season holding onto fourth for a sold 30 minutes. Pro Circuit’s Tyla Rattray was able to hunt down Peick and make the move for fourth place with less than two laps to go. Peick finished out the moto with a solid top-five finish.

Suzuki’s James Stewart is still struggling with neck pain from his crash at last week’s race at Unadilla and eventually pulled out of the race just past the halfway point. His younger brother Malcolm, however, ran just inside the top ten and had a close encounter with Honda’s Justin Barcia. Barcia ended up with the short stick when he was punted off the track by Stewart Number Two. The Honda rider barely missed colliding with a tower holing up some signage. Mookie would finish tenth while Bam-Bam remounted for an eleventh place.

Moto 2 saw Brayton once again getting out ahead of the pace only to get beat to the holeshot line, this time by Rockstar Suzuki’s Ryan Sipes. Villopoto and Dungey were right behind and both made their way around Sipes before the first lap was over. Canard and Barcia rounded out the top five at the end of the first lap.

Both Canard and Barcia moved past Sipes for third and fourth respectively, and later in the moto Sipes would crash and pull out of the race. The two Honda teammates rode in close quarters for the entire moto, but Bam-Bam just couldn’t make a move on Canard.

Peick charged to another fifth place, earning him a fourth place overall. Not too bad for a guy paying his own way and wrenching on his own bike out of a van.

RV2 was intent on wining the championship with a dominating performance and pulled away from Dungey. The KTM rider absolutely had to take the win to keep his repeat championship hopes alive, but it would not be as Villopoto was just too strong and too fast in the Utah altitude. The Kawasaki Rider is now tied with Jeremy McGrath for second in championship titles.

The final round of the championship will move to Lake Elsinore, California next weekend. Although the 450 championship is now in the books, the $25,000 Motorcycle Superstore Holeshot Championship will also go down to very last gate drop. Stay tuned for results and news from next weekend.
