World SBK Honda Season Preview 2013

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Honda will have only two full-time riders on the grid during the 2013 season, factory-backed Pata Honda World Superbike team’s Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam. Rea has been with Honda for five straight seasons and in that time has earned 10 race wins and 29 total trips to the podium. In 2012, Rea made the top-step twice and finished fifth in overall points.

He’s concerned with ironing out electronics issues that frustrated him throughout the previous season, and recently completed testing at Phillip Island where he was consistently within one second of the top-time.

Haslam ended his two-year tenure with BMW in 2012, returning to the CBR1000RR he raced as a privateer in Superbike in 2009. In 2010 he moved to Team Alstare Suzuki and took fourth in the series, marking the best overall showing of his career in the premier class. Unfortunately his two-year contract was cut short after one season when Suzuki and Team Alstare failed to reach a timely agreement on the "situation for the future of the team," forcing Alstare team owner Francis Batta to let the British rider go. He’s coming into 2013 feeling more fit and ready than ever to challenge for the championship.

Though the title sponsor changed for 2013, the Pata Honda team continues to be a Ten Kate-run production, benefitting from the decades of experience of Gerrit and his cousin Ronald ten Kate.

2013 Honda SBK Roster:
#65 Jonathan Rea – Pata Honda
#91 Leon Haslam – Pata Honda

@lonewolf07 - Glad you enjoyed the preview, and you are absolutely right about Haslam, he got in one good season with Team Alstare before they started having trouble with Suzuki at the end of the 2010 season. Thanks for the heads up.

Great preview for the new season guys. I do have one question or concern if you like, I thought in 2010 Leon Haslam ran with Alstar Suzuki? "In 2010 he took the Honda to fourth overall, marking the best overall showing of his career in the premier class." Do you still mean 2009? Not trying to cause trouble just making sure Haslam's ride was a Suzuki in '10
