Daytona SportBike Laguna Seca Results 2013

Sunday, July 21, 2013
Yamaha Extended Service’s Cameron Beaubier continued to dominate the AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike class at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, winning his fifth consecutive race almost three seconds ahead of his teammate and second-place finisher, Garrett Gerloff. RoadRace Factory’s Jake Gagne rounded out the podium.

Beaubier started the day from pole position but fell back to fourth through the opening lap behind Gagne, Latus Motors Racing’s Jason DiSalvo and Gerloff. Gerloff was first to move up the ranks in the lead pack, getting past DiSalvo early for second position. Gagne kept steady out front, but his tenure there would prove to be short-lived because Beauber was on the move, pushing past DiSalvo for third just a few laps into the race and then getting past Gerloff soon after. It wasn’t long before the methodical Beaubier picked-off Gagne as well, and once out front he proceeded to slowly build a gap on the field.

The riders behind Beaubier were given a second chance to contend for the win after the race was red flagged following a crash with five laps remaining. The series points leader started from pole position once again and didn’t waste any time at the restart, keeping his lead intact and pulling away from the field almost immediately.

"I kind of slacked on the first start and I went back to fifth," said Beaubier. "I was on the outside of DiSalvo, and he ran a little wide. I finally made my way up to the front, put my head down, and pulled a little gap and then I saw the red flag. I thought, 'Oh man, it's going to be a bummer if we have to restart.' So, I just made sure I got a really good start on the restart and just put my head down. I knew Jake and Garrett were going to be right there. I have to give it up to my whole Yamaha Extended Service/Monster Energy/Graves Yamaha crew. They've been working so hard and giving us awesome bikes."

Gagne and Gerloff were running in second and third respectively prior to the incident, but they had to fight past Gagne’s teammate, JD Beach and DiSalvo to earn them back after competition resumed. Gerloff quickly moved past both riders into second-place and Gagne followed suit soon after. Gagne kept on Gerloff’s rear tire to the checkers, but was unable to regain his runner-up spot before the end.

DiSalvo ended the day in fourth-place followed by Beach in fifth. Meen Motorsports’ Jake Lewis took sixth with GEICO Motorcycle’s Dane Westby trailing in seventh and National Guard’s James Rispoli in eighth.

Beaubier now leads the series by 56 points ahead of Gagne. Beach is third overall followed by Gerloff in fourth and Rispoli in fifth.
