Team 95’s Hayden Gillim kept his AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com
SuperSport East division title hopes alive with the Race 1 win at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Gillim maintained a slim, 0.007 advantage over current East division points leader Corey Alexander of National Guard/Celtic Racing. RoadRace Factory’s Tomas Puerta rounded out the podium.
Gillim was hot off the start, gaining the lead through the initial laps ahead of Puerta, Alexander and Motosport.com’s Stefano Mesa. Over the subsequent laps Gillim built a multi-second lead over the rest of the field but Alexander began to turn up the pressure mid-race, moving into second-place and cutting the gap on Gillim in the space of just a few laps. As Puerta and Mesa battled for the final step on the rostrum, Alexander pressured Gillim for the lead and the two swapped position a number of times. Lapped traffic proved to be a big factor, allowing Alexander to make a decisive move to the front and then giving Gillim the chance to answer back soon after.
With six laps remaining and the fight for the lead raging, a red flag was thrown after TOBC Racing’s Nick McFadden went down. Riders returned to the pit area and waited for the grid-and-go restart.
Alexander ran to the head of the pack at the beginning of the restart, followed by Puerta, Gillim and Mesa. Gillim sat behind Puerta for only a short period before moving past and pushing to challenge Alexander for the front. With four laps remaining Gillim slipped past Alexander as the riders dipped into Turn 1 and then on the following lap Alexander answered back with a move in the same location. Puerta got in the mix as well, moving past both riders for a brief stint in the lead but Gillim and Alexander muscled past moving into the final lap and relegated Puerta back to third. Gillim held the lead through the final lap and though Alexander tried to drive past as they approached the finish line, he came up just short of the win.
Mar Del Auto’s Mark Miller Jr. took fifth followed by EYK’s Erick Sanchez in sixth. BP Racing duo Sebastiao Ferreira and Charles Weaver finished seventh and eighth respectively followed by Motorcycle-Superstore.com’s Devon McDonough in ninth.
Alexander remains in the overall points lead, but Gillim is now just four points back in second.
