MotoGP Sepang Unofficial Test Day 2

Tuesday, November 27, 2012
Marc Marquez got a full day of dry condition testing at Sepang on the second of a planned three-day unofficial session at the Malaysian circuit.
Dry conditions allowed Marc Marquez to approach the pole record during the second day of unofficial testing at Sepang.
Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez and Go & Fun Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista got nearly a full day of testing in dry conditions during Day 2 at Sepang. Rain from the night before had left the track damp in the early morning hours, but close to 11:30 a.m. conditions had improved enough for both riders to venture out.

Marquez was able to work through a variety of settings as well as climb aboard the 2013 prototype. In total, the Spaniard logged 60 laps and posted the fastest lap time of the day at 2’01.355, just over one second behind the current pole record for the circuit.

“Today we finally had dry conditions for the whole day,” said Marquez. “In the morning the track was a little wet still from yesterday but it dried up pretty quickly and we were able to go out on track at around 11:30 a.m. and make use of the entire day. In the first exit we improved our time from yesterday which is definitely a positive. Then we tried some new set ups and I started to understand the bike better and my confidence began to grow.

“I also tried the 2013 prototype today which felt good, but it's more important that I take my time to learn the MotoGP bike and adapt my riding style to suit these bigger machines. It's been a great day and I hope the weather remains dry for tomorrow so we can cover more laps and continue to learn."

Bautista had plenty of work to do as well, testing a host of new items from Showa in an effort to determine the suspension that will be put to use in 2013. In comments after the session Bautista lamented that they were still unable to find any significant improvements. He added that a discussion will need to occur with HRC to decide whether the Showa components will make the cut for the upcoming season.

Honda test riders Kosuke Akiyoshi and Takumi Takahashi were also on hand to add further input in the development of the 2013 prototype. Akiyoshi focused on evaluating the machine’s new engine parts and Takahashi worked to improve his feel on the bike. Takahashi's day was stalled mid-session by a crash, though he was able to walk away unharmed.
