Marquez Closes COTA Test on Top

Friday, March 15, 2013
MotoGP rookie Marc Marquez continued to set the pace during a private three-day test at the new Circuit of the Americas. The Spaniard led his Repsol Honda teammate and countryman Dani Pedrosa. LCR satellite Honda rider Stefan Bradl paced third-fastest and, within a second of the Marquez.

Marquez posted 60 laps on the final day. Having topped the timesheet every day of the test, he continued to improve his lap time as well. The 2012 Moto2 shaved more than a second off his Day 2 best.

“This final day has been good for me. From the beginning I had the same feeling as yesterday and especially this morning we started to try some technical settings for the first time and we found some big improvements. After lunch we were considering a race simulation but in the end we spent the time working with the electronics,” said Marquez. “It's been important to come and test here as we will be here for the second race. It's quite a physical track –especially the first sector– but in the end, we now know the track a little and we have a good base for when we come here for the GP."

Pedrosa turned only 25 laps on the day, resting during the afternoon session from a slight neck strain in the morning. Said Pedrosa: "After the first exit this morning I had a pain in my neck, I'm not sure what caused it but it affected my riding so I decided not to do so many laps today. Everything has gone well though in general, we had three positive days and I'm happy we came here, because we were able to put in many laps of this circuit which is very tricky and difficult.”

The three Hondas were the only prototypes on the grid for Day 3, as the Factory Yamaha team left after the second day of testing at COTA.

CRT entries from Attack Performance and GPTech also participated in the COTA tests, having previously tested at the Austin circuit in February. Michael Barnes and the GPTech squad wrapped testing after Wednesday, like the Factory Yamaha squad. However, Blake Young continued to pilot the Kawasaki-powered Attack machine for 42 laps. The former American SuperBike contender lapped within nine seconds of Marquez.

The MotoGP preseason testing concludes next week, with an official three-day test Jerez March 23-25.
