MotoGP Aragon Results 2013

Sunday, September 29, 2013
Marc Marquez extended his points lead over Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo for the 2013 MotoGP Championship at Motorland Aragon. Marquez grabbed his 6th overall victory in his rookie year after a crash from his teammate Dani Pedrosa turned the title chase into a two-man battle. The rookie rider now sits 39 points ahead of the current World Champ.

When the lights went out, Lorenzo sprinted out to a commanding lead, putting Marquez and Pedrosa over a second behind him after the first lap in that order. Valentino Rossi held down fourth place with Alvaro Bautista, Stefan Bradl and Cal Crutchlow in tow.

On Lap Five Pedrosa squirted past Marquez as they closed the gap on the leader. Shortly after, the two Honda riders made slight contact as Marquez came in too hot into a left. A small bump was the result as the rookie went wide into the run-out to avoid a major incident, and it looked like a no-harm-no-foul scenario. However, a half-second later, Pedrosa’s rear tire slipped and high-sided him exiting the corner. Whether the contact had anything to do with the crash will be a fodder for debate on Internet forums worldwide this week. Either way, Pedrosa’s chance for a world championship is all but gone. UPDATE: The contact between Marquez and Pedrosa clipped a traction control wire on Pedrosa's bike, causing the subsequent crash. The two riders have been summoned by Race Direction over the incident, with a meeting planned next week a day prior to the racing action at Sepang.

Marquez Recovered quickly and set to the task of reeling in Lorenzo, and by Lap 13, he closed the two-second gap and made a easy pass for the lead. From there it looked like the Number 99 was set to return the favor at some point, but Marquez was able to keep a comfortable distance from the second place rider.

A late-race battle for third place saw Rossi, Bautista and Bradl all swapping positions briefly with the seven-time MotoGP Champ getting the best of the exchange. Bautista finished fourth with Bradl right behind. Crutchlow could only watch the three duke it out from his sixth place position less than a half a second adrift of the pack.

Bradley Smith finished in seventh behind his senior teammate while the two Factory Ducatis of Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden slotted in at eight and ninth respectively. Andrea Iannone rounded out the top-ten on the Parmac Ducati.

The MotoGP Series moves to Malaysia in two weeks time for Round 15 of the World Championship. Will the rookie sensation that is Marquez continue to increase his lead or will the reigning champ Lorenzo wrestle points back as the season nears its conclusion? Stay tuned to find out.
