Atlanta 450 Supercross Results 2014

Saturday, February 22, 2014
Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen grabbed his second win of the season in Atlanta, beating out his pre-season mentor and defending Supercross champion Ryan Villopoto of Monster Energy Kawasaki. Roczen’s teammate, Ryan Dungey, rounded out the podium.

Roczen, Villopoto and Dungey were within the top-five off the start, but the holeshot and early lead went to Smartop Motoconcepts’ Mike Alessi. It was the Suzuki rider’s best showing yet this season, and he was able to hold the front through the first five laps before a slight mistake opened the door for Villopoto to take over. Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart slotted into second-place off the start but after the opening lap Bubba went down, falling to last position. He battled up the ranks for the rest of the race and crossed the line in 11th.

Villopoto maintained the lead through the bulk of the contest, though Roczen held close never letting the Kawasaki ace open up much of a gap. With six laps remaining Villopoto made a mistake and Roczen was there to capitalize, moving to the lead where he’d hold to the checkers.

“I don’t believe this,” said Roczen. “Getting on the podium is one thing but a win is another … such an awesome feeling. This proves that hard work pays off and helps build my confidence.”

Dungey lost too much time on the front runners to challenge for a number one or two spot, crossing the line five seconds after Villopoto. GEICO Honda’s Wil Hahn turned a strong start to his best finish of the year in fourth followed by JGRMX’s Justin Brayton in fifth.

Alessi slipped down the ranks after his impressive start and ultimately finished sixth, earning his best result of the season so far. RCH Suzuki’s Broc Tickle scored seventh followed by Motospot.com’s Weston Peick in eighth and Brayton’s teammate, Josh Grant, in ninth.

Team Muscle Milk Honda’s Justin Barcia was unable to race due to a knee injury sustained earlier in the day.

The points remain tight between Villopoto, who retains the overall lead, and Roczen, who is nine points back in second. Stewart is third an additional 17 points back followed by Dungey in fourth and Brayton in fifth.
