SuperSport Road America Race 2 Results 2014

Sunday, June 1, 2014
Suzuki pilot Hayden Gillim ended Celtic Racing rider Corey Alexander’s perfect 2014 season with a win in AMA Pro SuperSport Race 2 at Road America. Tuned Industries’ Jason Aguilar rounded out the podium.

Race 2 was fraught with incidents, starting first with a red flag within the opening laps when Adrenalin Electric’s Carl Soltisz crashed out. Riders were soon back on the grid for the restart but a few more laps in rain started to fall on portions of the track, causing a host of riders to go down at Turn 2. This happened just after Alexander’s teammate, Wyatt Farris and Houston Superbike’s Dustin Dominguez made contact, which forced Dominguez to stand the bike up and run into the gravel. He was on a straight line into a barrier wall and wasn’t slowing in time to avoid injury, so bailed off his bike just before impact.

Race officials took extra time after the second red flag to give riders time to collect themselves and prepare for the shortened, five lap finish to the race. The rain had stopped by then and the track was clear and Gillim took full advantage. He rocketed off the start into the early lead followed closely by Farris and Alexander. Farris dropped back in the ranks a bit as Alexander pushed forward, and the eventual top-two finishers pulled well ahead of the field in the battle for the win.

Gillim found he could draft pass Alexander on the straight just before the finish a few laps before the checkers, and situated himself to do just that on the final lap. Gillim passed Alexander entering Turn 1 on the final rotation, and Alexander answered back a few corners later. Gillim remained glued to Alexander’s rear tire though and got a great drive off the final corner, timing his draft perfectly and finishing just 0.015 seconds ahead of the series points leader.

De Keyrel Racing’s Kaleb De Keyrel finished in fourth ahead of Farris in fifth and House of Paint Designs’ JC Camacho sixth. Excel Racing’s Conner Blevins took seventh followed by Dominguez in eighth.

Alexander’s flawless performances in the first three races of the year keeps him well secure at the top of the points list, still 29 points ahead of Gillim in second. Farris sits third followed by Dominguez fourth and Aguilar in fifth.
