SportBike Road America Race 2 Results 2014

Sunday, June 1, 2014
RoadRace Factory’s Jake Gagne doubled up in AMA Pro Daytona SportBike with his commanding win in Race 2 at Road America. Yamaha Extended Service’s JD Beach trailed Gagne by over 12 seconds at the line in second-place followed by Yamalube Westby Racing’s Dane Westby in third.

Off the start, Beach’s teammate Garrett Gerloff got a good run into Turn 1, taking the early lead, but Gagne was right behind and bested the Y.E.S. rider a few turns into the first lap. MotoSport.com’s Jake Lewis was in the lead pack mix as well in fourth but then disaster struck as a puff of white smoke came from Gerloff’s machine and a few corners later both he and Lewis were off the track into the gravel.

There was apparently some fluid lost in the mechanical failure of Gerloff’s machine, which caused the incident. Lewis was able to walk away and rejoin late in the restart after his team rebuilt portions of his machine, but Gerloff was unable to return. There’s no word yet on whether Gerloff suffered any serious injury in the incident.

Gagne drove quickly to the front after the restart and never looked back, putting a sizable gap on the field through the remaining laps. Beach, Westby and Riders Discount’s Danny Eslick kept close in the battle for second, though toward the end of the race Westby and Beach pulled away. The two swapped position a number of times but Beach eventually gained the upper hand, finishing over eight seconds ahead of Westby in third.

Eslick crossed in fourth ahead of Gagne’s teammate, Tomas Puerta in fifth. Puerta led a pack of riders in close competition, which included Team H35’s Benny Solis, who finished sixth, D&D Cycles’ Steve Rapp in seventh, Kyle Wyman Racing’s Kyle Wyman in eighth and GEICO Motorcycle’s Jake Zemke in ninth. Castrol Triumph’s Elena Myers was in the mix as well, lapping as high as sixth late in the race, but before the checkers was forced to pull back with mechanical issues.

Gagne leads in Daytona SportBike points, followed by Daytona 200 winner Eslick in second. Lewis sits third after mounting a commendable comeback following his early off and late restart in Race 2, where he finished 14th. Gerloff is fourth followed by Beach in fifth.
