World Superbike Portimao Superpole 2014

Saturday, July 5, 2014
Kawasaki Racing’s Tom Sykes earned his third pole position of the 2014 World Superbike Championship at Portimao. Pata Honda’s Jonathan Rea will start from second on the grid followed by Ducati’s Chaz Davies in third.

Sykes was pacing quick throughout the session, trading the top-spot on the timesheet with Rea and Aprilia’s Sylvain Guintoli during the initial minutes. Sykes’ teammate, Loris Baz, was fast as well and challenged for the number-one position throughout. As SP2 came to a close and riders began to push to the limit, Sykes prevailed by two-tenths of a second over Rea, who slipped into second on his final rotation. Lap times were close down the line, with less than a second covering the top nine riders.

Aprilia’s Marco Melandri starts from fourth followed by Baz in fifth and Guintoli in sixth. Voltcom Crescent Suzuki’s Eugene Laverty finished in seventh position trailed by Davis’ teammate, Davide Giugliano, in eighth and Rea’s teammate, Leon Haslam, in ninth. BMW Motorrad Italia SBK’s Sylvain Barrier claimed the fastest EVO qualifying spot in 10th.

Laverty’s teammate, Alex Lowes, was pushing for a fast lap late in the session but lost the machine and went down instead. He was uninjured in the incident and will start from 11th.

Further down the line, MV Agusta's Claudio Corti suffered a crash in SP1 which required him to leave the session to go for medical evaluation. Red Devils Roma's Toni Elias was unable to log a lap time in SP1 as well, due to a mechanical issue early in the session.
