Hangtown 250 Motocross Results 2014

Saturday, May 31, 2014
Any suspicions that Jeremy Martin’s performance at Glen Helen was a fluke were laid to rest at Hangtown, where the Yamalube Yamaha Star Racing rider again went 1-1 and completely decimated the field. His teammate, Cooper Webb, maintained his position as a title-contender, finishing second overall with a 2-2 finish. Valli Yamaha’s Christophe Pourcel’s 8-3 result for third in the round left little doubt that Yamaha came to compete in 2014.

Moto 1

Behind the powerhouse Martin/Webb duo was GEICO Honda’s Justin Bogle, who finished third in Moto 1. Bogle’s teammate, Zach Bell, scored the holeshot to start the day, but Martin was right on his tail, passing for the lead in the opening turns. Bogle scrambled to get past Bell as well in order to keep Martin in his sights, while Webb battled his way up to third.

Behind the front runners, Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin and Rockstar KTM’s Jason Anderson made contact when the French rider came in fast on Anderson’s rear tire. Both riders went down but both were able to remount and battle back up the ranks.

In the lead, Martin was already checking out within the opening minutes. Bogle kept his pace up but Webb finally caught the Honda rider and made a bid for the runner-up spot, but Bogle didn’t want to give up his position easily. Webb attempted a pass on Bogle but the Honda ace held his line which knocked Webb to the ground briefly. Bogle was able to breathe a little easier for a while, but Webb remounted quickly and with eight minutes remaining made up the gap and executed a pass which stuck.

Monster Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Justin Hill got up to fifth early in the first moto and by the end had worked his way to fourth, nearly catching Bogle at the finish line. Bell earned fifth ahead of Hill’s teammate, Blake Baggett, who staged a late race come-back after lapping outside the top-10 early on. Troy Lee Designs’ Jessy Nelson took seventh ahead of Pourcel in eighth while Musquin and Anderson clawed back up the ranks to finish in ninth and 10th.

Moto 2

Martin, Webb and Pourcel led the field into the first corners of Moto 2, with Bogle and teammate Matt Bisceglia keeping up in fourth and fifth. With an open track ahead though, the three Yamaha riders took off, with Pourcel and Webb going back-and-forth early for second-place but facing no significant challenges after that for a spot on the podium.

Anderson enjoyed a much more successful moto the second time around at Hangtown, battling back from eighth-place off the start to finish in fourth. Nelson made up impressive ground throughout the contest as well, and late in the race challenged Hill for fifth. The Honda rider passed Hill with only a few laps remaining and Hill fought furiously to retaliate. If Hill had been able to move past Nelson before the checkers, he’d have finished on the overall podium. Instead he took sixth in the moto and finishes fourth overall. Baggett was unable to wage an attack on Yamaha’s dominance after bike issues forced him to pull out of the race. Nelson’s teammate, Cole Seely, was also forced to pull out.

Martin’s perfect record through the opening two rounds of the season leaves him leading in points, 12 ahead of Webb in second. Pourcel moves to third in the rankings followed by Nelson in fourth and Musquin in fifth.
