2014 MotoGP Sepang Test Day 2

Wednesday, February 5, 2014
Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez topped the timesheet for a second consecutive day at Sepang, breaking the 2’00 mark with a fastest lap of 1’59.926. Marquez’s teammate, Dani Pedrosa, notched the second-best effort of the day followed by LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl in third.

Marquez focused his attention on testing new parts with emphasis on improving stability while braking. Pedrosa compared a new version of the chassis to the one used in 2013 and also spent time gaining information on the new Bridgestone soft-option tires.

Factory Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi shaved four-tenths of a second off his opening session time to finish fourth. NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Aleix Espargaro finished six-tenths of a second behind the leader in fifth on his Open class FTR-Yamaha followed by Rossi’s teammate, Jorge Lorenzo, in sixth.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Bradley Smith managed an extensive program on Day 2 that included a 15 lap race simulation to analyze fuel consumption. The British rider finished seventh-fastest ahead of Pramac Racing’s Andrea Iannone in eighth. Go & Fun Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista ended in ninth followed by Smith’s teammate, rookie Pol Espargaro. Even though Espargaro finished lower on the timesheet on Day 2, his lap time improved by over half a second compared to his best effort in the previous session.

Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow both cut over one second from their Session 1 lap times the second day, finishing 11th and 12th respectively. Dovi cites improvements in corner entry and power delivery while Crutchlow says his comfort level with the GP14 has improved.

Further down the list, Drive M7 Aspar’s Nicky Hayden also improved his lap times in Session 2 by over one second. He finished the day in 14th position.

“I am happy because we have improved the lap time quite significantly from yesterday although the pace in general has been quicker,” said Hayden. “Once again we focused our work on the electronics and the engine braking, which gave us a bit more in corner entry. You could say that I am still adapting myself because I have spent a long time on a completely different kind of bike and now I have to readjust my riding style, the way I am braking and entering the corner.”

Suzuki Test Team also improved with Randy de Puniet notching the 20th best time of the day at 2’03.064, nearly eight-tenths of a second faster than the Session 1 time.

Testing continues on Thursday, finishing off the three-day stint in Malaysia.
