Motorcycling spawns subcultures. Britain has its mods and rockers, America’s got its Hells Angels, and Japan’s got its Bosozoku Motorcycle Gang. Moto-punks infused with Imperial Japanese flair, the Bosozoku style is popularized in anime and manga. The word literally translates to ‘violent running tribes.’ The Kamikaze uniform clad bikers spawned a Japanese subculture back in the ‘50.
As you can see by this video, Bosozoku love to rev their engines.

Maybe I’m a simple creature, but it doesn’t take carbon fiber or titanium to ignite my prurient interests. Sex appeal and motorcycles go hand-in-hand. Plenty of bikes have it, and plenty don’t, but determining which is which boils down to that old saying about “whatever floats your boat.

The folks from OnTheThrottle recently spent some time in the sky with seven-time AMA Superbike Champion and avid airman Mat Mladin, and his in-the-air mentor and seven-time AMA Motocross Champion, Bob Hannah. The video was shot just before Mladin packed up his bags for good, heading back home to Oz, to continue running his Australian motorcycle parts and accessories import business.

Who says off-road guys have no style? JCR has a video introduction of ace desert racer, Kendall Norman. JCR is Honda’s factory off-road effort now so this guy is the desert version of Andrew Short and Davi Millsaps. Team owner, Johnny Campbell, is the Man when it comes to Baja racing these days, so when he says that Norman is his pick to succeed him and take the reins south of the border is quite an endorsement.

Chad Reed is looking very comfortable on his new KX450F and the race practice will pay off when the AMA series starts.
The racing action is a little slow this time of year so for those of you who need a fix, try keeping track of the Australasian Supercross Championship.

Kawasaki shook up the sport-touring class when it crammed the ZX-14’s monster motor into a tourer dubbed the Concours 14. And while the re-invigorated Connie delivered unquestioned high-performance at the throttle, as an overall touring platform there were quirks that could use improvement.

It’s hard to imagine that up until yesterday, in the 20 years the World Superbike Championship has been running, Yamaha has never won a World Championship. This of course all changed when its rookie rider, Ben Spies pulled it off aboard his newly redesigned 2009 Yamaha YZF-R1. Greetings all, it’s full-on Valentino Rossi madness here in Italy, as the country is seemingly on a national holiday after their boy just won his ninth roadracing Grand Prix title. Every newspaper you pickup has literally eight and sometimes ten full pages dedicated to the man from Tavullia. It’s absolutely fascinating how serious Italians take their motorbike racing. Imagine newly crowned 2009 World Superbike champ Ben Spies receiving that kind of coverage in the L.A. Times.

Gotta love the Aussies. They’re not ones to water things down as evidenced by this video made by Australia’s Transport Accident Commission (TAC). Reminds me of the ‘Scared Straight’ programs they used to televise when I was growing up where they took young kids that were repeatedly getting in trouble with the law and took them to prison for a little one-on-one time with the inmates. Nothing opens up one’s eyes better than a harsh dose of reality.

Our neighbors here in Southern Oregon, Brammo Motorsports, have been making a lot of news lately. First, by pushing an improved version of the electric Enertia powercycle into production and onto the sales floor at Best Buy. Second, a prominent role in the first-ever international electric road race - the TTXGP at the Isle of Man. And now the Brammo boys are staging a savvy PR coup by delivering an Enertia to our president, Barack Obama.
