Ride of a Lifetime: Testing GNC Flat Trackers

Putting six of the top GNC flat track machines to the test around the Arizona Mile.
MotoUSA was recently invited to test six of today’s top GNC flat track machines around the Arizona Mile the Sunday after the final AMA National.

What a day! What an experience! What am I talking about?

This past Sunday following the final AMA Flat Track National, Will Fulford from TheFastandDirty.com organized a test of massive proportions for two of the industry’s top magazines and MotoUSA was lucky enough to be one of them. The comparison consisted of one machine from each of the six manufacturers currently competing in the AMA GNC Flat Track Expert Twins Championship, which we would be riding back-to-back around the Arizona Mile.

These are the biggest and baddest bikes that the flat track world has to offer and the plan was to test them around one of the fastest and most technically-demanding tracks on the entire AMA calendar. The idea was to feel firsthand just what it’s like to pilot one of these awesome bikes at speed, as well as see how the six different brands stack up against each other.

Yavapai Downs in Prescott, Arizona, played host to the comparison, and it had all the makings to be an all-time great. Rarely has a journalist been allowed to ride one of these hand-built GNC machines, let alone multiple in a single test. Same holds true for spinning laps around a Mile, as the opportunity for someone that doesn’t hold a professional flat track license to ride around such a high-speed and demanding track has rarely been done before. It’s for this reason that the moment the opportunity came across our desks, we gladly accepted. No need to check the schedule, we would make it happen no matter the cost.

And what a test it turned out to be! While I was a bit nervous beforehand, to say the least, once out on track and with a few laps aboard Jeffery Carver’s Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Championship-winning Yamaha under my belt, I was ready to take on the big boys. The power and torque produced by these GNC Twins is downright unreal, each brand delivering it in a totally unique manner, but each producing far more than enough to easily scare us mere mortals with the slightest twist of the right grip. Combine that with the extremely technical and slick nature of the track, plus its 100mph-plus average speeds, and the end result were some of the most white-knuckled and exhilarating laps of my life, making for a truly awesome experience as well as an amazing test!

So stay tuned right here for the full feature story and video in the coming weeks; it’s sure to be one for the record books…
